SPEAKING & TRAINING

Dr. Smiler routinely speaks to professionals, parents, and teens on a variety of topics related to male sexuality, masculinity, and therapy with men. If you are interested in having him speak to your group, please use the contact page. Workshops include:

  • Creating Sexually Healthy Teen Boys. This training explores the typical messages boys receive about dating and sexuality from a range of American cultural sources, identifies messages they don’t typically receive, and helps practitioners (and parents) develop strategies to help boys’ (re-)construct their understanding of dating and sexuality. This program can be delivered in lengths as short as 60 minutes and as long as 1 day.
  • Creating a Therapeutic Alliance with Adolescent Boys/Adult Men: This training explores the expectations that teen boys and adult men typically have regarding therapy, explores assumptions therapists (and therapy modalities) have regarding what it means to be a “good client,” and helps participants develop strategies and frameworks to create better working relationships with male clients. This program can be delivered in lengths as short as 60 minutes and as long as 1 day.
  • Is Masculinity Toxic?: This program explores what masculinity means and how that definition has changed during the history of the United States, and outcomes of the currently dominant definition. Both positives and negatives are addressed. This program can be delivered in lengths as short as 60 minutes and as long as 1/2 day.
